The Huntsville Arsenal was founded in April 1941 as a chemical weapons site. In 1943 Redstone Arsenal was established next to the Huntsville Arsenal. In 1956 the Army Ballistic Missile Agency was formed to develop intermediate range ballistic missiles, and in 1958 the Army Ordnance Missile Command was created.
