The Montfaucon American Monument was dedicated by the American Battle Monuments Commission in 1937 to commemorate the World War I American victory during the Meuse-Argonne offensive that began in late September 1918. Troops under the command of Gen. Robert Lee Bullard of present-day Lee County took part in the offensive and helped drive German forces into retreat and eventual defeat in November.
