Steel and cotton mill workers' hats line the wall in the vestibule of a Gadsden Baptist church during a Sunday service in this photograph from December 1940. The image was captured by photographer John Vachon for the federal Farm Securities Administration; he would go on to great notoriety as a staff photographer for Life and Look magazines.
