During the early twentieth century, Italian sculptor Giuseppe Moretti, whose first contribution to Alabama was the Vulcan statue in Birmingham, used marble from Gantt's Quarry near Sylacauga for a number of his works. The area continues to be an important source of marble for architecture and sculpture.
