After the U.S. Army's victory at the Battle of Shiloh and the subsequent seizure of Huntsville, Madison County, Maj. Gen. Don Carlos Buell received permission to enlist Alabamians into the U.S. Army. The First Alabama U.S. Cavalry emerged from this effort.
