Le Vert Mansion

This home at 151 and 153 Government Street in Mobile was the residence of Octavia Walton Le Vert and her husband Henry Strachey Le Vert, the son of a French physician who had settled in Mobile after the American Revolution. Henry Le Vert's office for his medical practice was located in the attached wing at the right. The core of the home was built around 1827, but its evolution into a mansion occurred in 1847, when it was purchased by German cartographer and geographer Baron Adolph von Steinwehr, who was then a surveyor for the U.S. Coast Survey. He later served as a general for the U.S. Army during the Civil War
