The day following his promotion to brigadier general in December 1862, John Hunt Morgan married Martha "Mattie" Ready (pictured with Morgan), daughter of Charles Ready, a former congressman from Tennessee. A comment upon Morgan's social standing, the wedding was attended by Confederate president Jefferson Davis and other dignitaries.
