Huntsville native Jeremiah Clemens was an early writer in the Western novel genre, but he is best known for his political views. He served Alabama in the U.S. Senate (1849-53) and although he supported slavery, he was adamantly opposed to secession and became pro-Union. He was a second cousin of Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain.
