Hugo L. Black, shown here in the 1930s, represented Alabama as a Democrat in the U.S. Senate (1926-1937) for two terms. In 1937, Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt named Black to the U.S. Supreme Court (1937-1971). Black was born in Clay County and graduated from the University of Alabama law school.
