This 1941 cartoon, likely published in the Washington Evening Star newspaper, portrays Rep. Henry Steagall of Alabama beating "John Q. Public" over the head. Powerful economic interests opposed Steagall's efforts to place controls on banking in the United States and mounted smear campaigns against him and the other members of the House Banking Committee of the U.S. Congress.
