Gulf Stream was the only novel by Mobile author Marie Layet Sheip (1885-1936), who published it in 1930 under the pen name Marie Stanley. It was favorably reviewed but created justifiable outrage among the inhabitants of Sand Town (an African American neighborhood in Mobile used as the setting of the novel) for Sheip’s portrayal of the local Black dialect in a book by a white author.
