U.S. Army troops and horses under the command of Maj. Gen. Benjamin H. Grierson camp outside Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in April 1863 during a break in their 600-mile raid through Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Grierson's forces were part of a series of federal raids through the South during the Civil War, with his being the last of the conflict.
