Established in 1812, Green Academy in Huntsville, Madison County, was, for many years, the only school in north Alabama. The building was burned by Union troops during the Civil War. This photo shows the unveiling of the historical marker at the site in 1956; J.S. Gowan, Ella Ware, Martha Powell Askins, and Thomas W. Jones are pictured here (left to right).
