Freedom Rides Museum

The Freedom Rides Museum is located in the former Greyhound bus station in Montgomery where Freedom Riders were attacked by a mob of angry white men in May 1961. The building was used as a bus station until 1995 and was abandoned and gradually fell into a state of disrepair. A historic marker was placed in front of the building in 1996 by the Alabama Historical Commission, and 15 interpretive panels were added to the front of the building in 2008. In 2009, a renovation plan was enacted for the crumbling interior, and in 2011 the building opened as a museum and was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
