Excavations at the site of Fort Tombecbe, in Sumter County, have revealed the outline of the French palisade wall, represented by a dark linear stain in the ground. The stain was created when the French dug a trench in which to erect wooden stockade posts. The posts have long since rotted away, but they left softer and darker patches in the surrounding firm and chalky soil, making it possible for archaeologists to find the remains after some 275 years.
