Historic Fort Gaines is seen in February 2010 on Dauphin Island, Mobile County. The fort, along with Fort Morgan to thet east across the entrance to Mobile Bay, played a major role in the Battle of Mobile Bay in August 1864 during the Civil War. It was named for Revolutionary War hero Gen. Edmund Pendleton Gaines.
