In October 1944, during the Battle of Leyte in the Philippines, U.S. aircraft carrier USS Princeton was damaged by a Japanese dive bomber. The light carrier USS Birmingham came alongside to assist in firefighting efforts and was itself damaged when one of the Princeton's bomb magazines exploded.
