Fallen Marines on Saipan

An injured Marine sits by the covered bodies of his fallen comrades near the Japanese artillery nest that they were charged with destroying during the Battle of Saipan. The Japanese built scores of these fortifications, known as "pill boxes," throughout the islands they controlled in the Pacific during World War II.
