Downtown Mobile, 1954

A view of St. Joseph Street in 1954 shows two of Mobile's most well-known businesses of the early twentieth century. Waterman Steamship Corporation, left, was founded in 1919 and grew into one of the world's largest shipping companies. Merchants National Bank, right, helped fuel the economic boom in the city after World War II.
