Demographic Change in Alabama

This 1962 map illustrates Alabama counties that lost voters between 1860 and 1960. The numbers listed are broken down by race. Despite population shifts, reapportionment had not occurred in Alabama in many years. The 1964 Reynolds v. Sims decision applied the “one person, one vote” ruling from previous cases, determining that Alabama must reapportion its legislative districts to grant citizens equal voter representation.
