Educator and African Methodist Episcopal (AME) minister Daniel Payne (1811-1893) in a portrait by noted photographer Charles Milton Bell, ca. 1891. Payne was a leader in expanding the scope of the AME church in the South and was a driving force behind the establishment of educational institutions for African American in the mid- to late nineteenth century. The now-defunct Daniel Payne College in Selma, Dallas County, was named in his honor.
