Dabney H. Maury

Maj. Gen. Dabney H. Maury was a Confederate officer who oversaw the construction of Fort Blakeley and other Confederate defenses at the site. A native of Virginia, Maury graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He served in the Mexican-American War and was posted in the New Mexico Territory at the outbreak of the Civil War, at which point he resigned his commission and joined the Confederate Army as a colonel. After the war, he founded the Southern Historical Society and published numerous works on southern history.
