CSS Sumter

Originally built as the steamship Havana, the CSS Sumter was captained as a commercial raider by Confederate Commander Raphael Semmes from June 1861 to April 1862 during the Civil War. Semmes captured 18 U.S. merchant ships before abandoning the Sumter when it was blockaded in Gibraltar.
