Child Oyster Shuckers

Oyster shuckers photographed in Bayou La Batre in 1911 by noted social reformer and photographer Lewis Hine. Episcopal priest Edgar Gardner Murphy (1869-1913) was a lifelong advocate for child-labor reform, forming the Alabama Child Labor Committee in 1901 and in 1904 helping to organize the National Child Labor Committee.
