L. L. Burwell's Selma pharmacy, circa 1912. This pharmacy replaced his first business, which was destroyed in a suspicious fire in 1897. This second business was also destroyed by a fire the following year. Burwell opened the first Black-owned pharmacy in the city and trained many other Black pharmacists to improve the care received by the state's Black residents.
