Burgess E. Scruggs, photographed here in 1904, was the first African American physician in Huntsville, Madison County. He also served four terms as a city councilmember and was a noted civic leader. He was among the earliest Black physicians in Alabama, a group that included Arthur McKinnon Brown of Birmingham, Cornelius Dorsette of Montgomery, and Halle Tanner Dillon of Tuskegee Institute.
