Found throughout much of North America, the black crappie (Pomoxis nigromaculatus) is a popular game fish. Its abundance in adjacent Weiss Lake has earned the town of Cedar Bluff, in Cherokee County, the moniker "Crappie Capital of the World." The crappie is a member of the sunfish family that includes bass, bluegills, and pumpkinseeds, and its common name derives from the French Canadian word crapet, for fish in that family.
