Billy Hitchcock (1916-2006) was a player, coach, manager, and talent scout during his long career in baseball. He was born in Inverness, Bullock County, and attended Auburn University, where he played baseball and football. He then joined the Major Leagues in 1942 as a Detroit Tiger, served in the Pacific in World War II, and then resumed his baseball career with several teams. He retired in 1953 and then became a manager, notably for the Tigers and the Atlanta Braves. Auburn's baseball stadium is named Hitchcock Field at Plainsman Park for Billy and his brother Jimmy.
