Alva Belmont Speaking in Washington, D.C.

Philanthropist and women’s suffrage advocate Alva Belmont speaks at the dedication of the headquarters of the National Woman’s Party in Washington, D.C. in this photo from May 1929. The organization was founded in 1913 by suffrage leaders Alice Paul and Lucy Burns and promoted more radical changes to patriarchal society than mainstream organizations such as the National American Woman Suffrage Association. Belmont was a major benefactor of the organization.
