In 1963, Alabama Power Company installed hydroelectric power equipment at the Bankhead Lock and Dam, the highest dam on the Black Warrior River. The power plant is located to the left of the dam, and a portion of the original two-chamber lock juts from the dam's right side. The facility was named for Sen. John Hollis Bankhead for his support of transportation infrastructure in the state.
