Alabama State Fair Mural

Three years after completing his mural series on Mobile history for the Works Progress Administration, the agency commissioned John Augustus Walker to complete a second series devoted to agriculture. He completed ten murals in all, and they were viewed enthusiastically by some 300,000 attendees at the Alabama State Fair in Montgomery in autumn 1939. This mural celebrates the farming modernization efforts that had taken place in the state by that time, such as switching from plowing with draft animals to plowing with tractors.
