Alabama's rich folk pottery tradition began before the Civil War, and is carried on by a few remaining traditional pot throwers, such as Jerry Brown of Hamilton, Marion County, and the Miller family in Bibb and Perry counties. The most common stoneware techniques in Alabama are salt and alkaline glazing, and in recent years artists have shifted toward more ornate and specialized pottery designs to meet the needs of the changing market.
