Notable Women of Alabama

The accomplishments of Alabama women resonate across the state, the nation, and the world. Indeed, three famous women from the state have received the nation's highest civilian awards: Helen Keller was awarded the Congressional Medal of Freedom, Rosa Parks, the Congressional Gold Medal, and Harper Lee, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Alabama women have broken barriers in the military, the law, space exploration, science, education, and sports. They have influenced politics, institutions, and religion. And they have enriched the cultural life of the world through music, literature, and art.
