This map shows the location of the Valley and Ridge Physiographic Section in northeastern Alabama. It encompasses a region of the state that lies atop tightly folded and thrust-faulted rocks, creating a zigzag pattern of ridges and valleys, hence its name. The district played a significant role in Alabama's economic development because of its extensive deposits of iron ore, limestone, and dolomite, all of which were important to the rise of the iron and steel industry.
