The southern brook lamprey (Ichthyomyzon gagei) is one of six lamprey species found in Alabama. Alabama lampreys have a tube-shaped body, are less than 12 inches long, and lack upper and lower jaws. Two parasitic lampreys feed on the blood of other fishes. After feeding is completed, the lamprey will detach itself from the host fish and swim away.

Alabama is a state with a rich and diverse fish population. From mountain streams in the Appalachian foothills, to the Tennessee River system, to the estuaries of the Mobile basin, Alabama is home to 450 species of fish, more than anywhere else in North America. Several species are unique to Alabama, including the Alabama cavefish, which can only be found in a single cave in Lauderdale County.
