The accomplishments of Alabama women resonate across the state, the nation, and the world. Three famous women from the state have received the nation's highest civilian awards: Helen Keller, the Congressional Medal of Freedom; Rosa Parks, the Congressional Gold Medal; and Harper Lee, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Alabama women have broken barriers in the military, the law, education, and sports; influenced politics, institutions, and religion; and enriched lives through music, literature, and art.
