Bakerhill

Bakerhill is located in southern Barbour County in the southeastern corner of the state. It has a mayor/city council form of government. The Baker Hill Formation, a wide-spread layer of late Paleocene clays in southeastern Alabama, is named for the town.

History

When first settled, the town was located approximately a mile southeast of its present site and was known as Chestnuttville, after local merchant Alpheus R. Chesnutt. The town was renamed Bakerhill in the mid-nineteenth century after the Baker family, who relocated to the area from South Carolina. Early industries in Bakerhill included turpentine production and bauxite mining for the aluminum-manufacturing industry. Bakerhill is written alternately as either one or two words in many early documents, but the one-word form is used on official documents and maps. The town incorporated in January 1997, soon after a poultry-processing plant opened nearby.

Demographics 

According to 2020 Census estimates, Bakerhill recorded a population of 239. Of that number, 62.8 percent of respondents identified themselves as white, 36.4 percent as African American, 0.4 percent as Hispanic, and 0.8 percent as two or more races. The town’s median household income was $40,893, and the per capita income was $21,851.

  • Professional, scientific, and management, and administrative and waste management services (1.9 percent)

Education

Students in Bakerhill attend Barbour County schools; the town has no public schools within its town limits.

Transportation

State Highway 131 runs the length of Bakerhill through the center of town, and County Road 79S bisects the town running northwest-southeast.

Events and Places of Interest

The McGee Home (ca. 1873) is listed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage. Bakerhill is located near Lake Eufaula, Blue Springs State Park, and the White Oak Creek Recreation Area.
