Falkville

Falkville is centrally located in Morgan County in north central Alabama. It has a mayor/council form of government. The Echota Cherokee Tribe of Alabama maintains its tribal headquarters in Falkville.

History

Falkville The area around present-day Falkville was settled prior to the Civil War by Tennessean Malcolm Patterson and James Densmore. Later, veteran Louis Falk opened the first store there and was its first postmaster; the town was named in his honor. The Louisville & Nashville Railroad expanded into Alabama in the early 1870s, connecting Louisville, Kentucky, with Decatur, Falkville, and Montgomery, Montgomery County, by 1872, and a station was established in Falkville. Falkville was first incorporated in 1876 and again on June 19, 1886, and on December 13, 1898. The town would eventually include a branch of the Tennessee Valley Bank of Decatur, a lumber industry with a warehouse, a sawmill, a planing mill, cotton gins, and blacksmith shops. Falkville Normal College was constructed in 1896 at a cost of about $8,000 and graduated its first students in 1902. A high school was established in 1923 at the college; the town took control of it about this time, and this school became Falkville High School, the oldest school in Morgan County. A new high school was constructed in 1924 and another in 1936, with the elementary school moving into the older building. The schools currently share the same campus and some facilities.

Demographics

According to 2020 Census estimates, Falkville recorded a population of 1,382. Of that number, 91.2 percent reported itself as white, 3.0 percent as African American, 2.8 percent as Asian, 1.8 percent as two or more races, 1.2 percent as American Indian, and 0.3 percent as Hispanic or Latino Alaska Native. The median household income was $39,563 and per capita income is $24,271.

Education

Public education in Falkville is administered by Morgan County Schools that oversee one elementary and high school in the town.

Transportation

Falkville is accessed by Interstate 65 and U.S. Highway 31 that run north-south and parallel to one and other. Falkville is about four miles south of Rountree Field Airport in Hartselle and nine miles north of Folsom Field. CSX Transportation operates a rail line that runs through Falkville.

Events and Places of Interest

The county supports an athletic complex with several baseball diamonds and a track adjacent to Falkville.
