Hartford

Downtown Hartford Hartford is located in east-central Geneva County in the extreme southeast corner of the state, about ten miles from the Alabama-Florida line. It has a mayor/council form of government. Baseball Hall of Famer Early Wynn and NCAA Football Hall of Fame member Dixie Howell were born in Hartford.

History

Hartford was first known as Clemmons City after a local landholder who bought 80 acres and sold it off in lots. The town incorporated in 1896. In 1897, the town received both a new post office and a new name, Hartford. In 1900, the Central of Georgia Railway completed a line through Hartford. Agriculture was a mainstay in the local economy at that time.

Demographics

According to 2020 Census estimates, Hartford recorded a population of 2,584. Of that number, 63.9 percent of respondents identified themselves as white, 31.4 percent as African American, 3.2 percent as Hispanic, 2.6 percent as two or more races, and 2.1 percent as American Indian. The town’s median household income was $38,642, and the per capita income was $18,701.

  • Wholesale trade (9.4 percent)
  • Construction (8.9 percent)
  • Other services, except public administration (6.0 percent)
  • Public administration (3.2 percent)
  • Finance, insurance, and real estate, rental, and leasing (3.0 percent)
  • Professional, scientific, management, administrative and waste management services (2.5 percent)
  • Agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting, and extractive (1.1 percent)

Education

Public schools in Hartford are part of the Geneva County School system; the town has one elementary school, one middle school, and one high school.

Transportation

State Highway 52 runs east-west through Hartford, and State Highway 167 runs northwest-southeast. State Highway 123 runs northeast from town. The Geneva Municipal Airport is located approximately 10 miles southwest of Hartford.

Events and Places of Interest

Hartford holds the Hartford Holiday Festival the second Saturday in December.
