Confederate Warships

Several Confederate ships were connected to Alabama during the Civil War. The CSS Alabama, captained by famed Mobilian Raphael Semmes, was the Confederacy's most potent ocean raider, disrupting Union shipping lanes in the Atlantic with the capture of 65 vessels. The CSS Nashville, built in Montgomery, was an ironclad warship that participated in the Battle of Mobile Bay. The H.L. Hunley, built in Mobile, was the only Confederate submarine to perform successfully in naval combat, sinking the USS Housatonic off the coast of South Carolina before it, too, sank and was lost. The vessel was recovered in 2000 and resides at the Charleston Navy Yard in South Carolina.
