Nina Pinckard and Josephine A. Pearson

Montgomery native and anti-suffragist Nina Pinckard is shown here at left brandishing a Confederate flag. Next to her are a seated Confederate veteran and Josephine A. Pearson, a Tennessee leader of the anti-suffragist movement that arose during the effort to ratify the Nineteenth Amendment giving women the right to vote in the United States. In addition to opposing woman suffrage, these "anti-ratification leagues" promoted white supremacy and states' rights.
