Lloyd J. Austin III, a native of Mobile, Mobile County, is the nation's 28th Secretary of Defense and the first African American to hold the position. Austin had a long career in the U.S. military, including service in the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, prior to his retirement as a four-star general. He then served in various capacities in the private and nonprofit sectors prior to his confirmation.
