Map of the Battle of Mobile Bay

In this section of an 1864 map by Canadian-born painter Robert Knox Sneden, Fort Powell is the red diamond at the upper left above Dauphin Island. Fort Gaines can be seen at center, and Fort Morgan is shown at the lower right. The map depicts the movement of the U.S. naval fleet, in purple, before and after the Battle of Mobile Bay. Sneden was a map maker for the U.S. Army and was imprisoned at the Confederate prisoner of war camp at Andersonville, Georgia.
