Pres. Lyndon Johnson Signs Voting Rights Act of 1965

Pres. Lyndon B. Johnson signs the historic Voting Rights Act on August, 6, 1965, with civil rights leaders Ralph Abernathy Jr. (center left), Martin Luther King Jr. (center right), and others looking on. The act set in motion the dismantling of the numerous obstacles to voting rights that had been put in place by white supremacists since the end of Reconstruction.
