Springdale Estate

The Springdale estate in Andalusia, Covington County, encompasses several acres, a carriage house, and a large Spanish Eclectic-style mansion constructed in 1935 by John G. Scherf. Scherf emigrated from Germany at the turn of the twentieth century and settled in Andalusia, founding Alatex, a textile company that became one of the largest men's dress-shirt manufacturers in the nation. Scherf served four terms as Andalusia's mayor, retiring in 1948, one year before his death. The home was purchased by the city of Andalusia in 2010 and is used as an event center.
