The homespun musings of Montgomery County farmer George Morrison were the inspiration for the fictional Rufus Sanders, the pseudonym of syndicated columnist Francis Bartow Lloyd. The Sanders columns appeared in newspapers throughout the Southeast during the early 1890s. Lloyd was well acquainted with rural life, having been born in Lowndes County and raised on a farm in Butler County.
