Ohio Penitentiary

The Ohio Penitentiary, in Columbus, Ohio, was built in 1834 and was used to house Confederate prisoners during the Civil War. Gen. John Hunt Morgan and several of his fellow Confederate officers, who had been captured in July 1864, escaped from the prison in November by tunneling into the prison yard and scaling the walls. The prison was torn down in 1998.
