The Monte Sano Hotel, a 233-room resort, opened on the summit of Monte Sano, Madison County, in June 1887. The hotel and its mineral springs drew many wealthy residents from Huntsville and other cities. It closed in 1900 and was demolished in 1944 after many years of decline. Monte Sano State Park opened in 1938 and is one of most popular destinations in this region of Alabama.
