Shagbark Hickory

In Alabama, the shagbark hickory (Carya ovata) is typically found in the mixed hardwood forests of the mountainous Cumberland Plateau section. The tree is so named for its distinctive peeling bark and produces edible nuts in the fall. The wood is popular with barbecue enthusiasts for the smoky flavor it imparts to food cooked over it.
