Sloss Furnaces
Sloss Furnace Company
was integral to
Birmingham
's rise as an important center of
iron and steel production
during the late nineteenth century. The plant closed in 1970 and has been reinvented as a museum and arts center, particularly for metal artists. The site was named a
National Historic Landmark
in 1981.
